Cisco Meraki MS120-48 is a managed Layer 2 access switch designed specifically for distributed enterprise networks, branches, and small to medium-sized business offices. The key feature of the entire Meraki ecosystem is 100% cloud management through a single web dashboard (Meraki Dashboard). The switch has no classic CLI; once the cable is connected, it automatically downloads its configuration from the cloud (Zero-Touch Provisioning).
⚠️ Important lifecycle status: Cisco Meraki has officially moved the MS120 line to End-of-Life (EoL) status. Direct sales of new devices ended on March 28, 2025, and the End-of-Support phase will continue until March 28, 2030. The direct replacement is the current Meraki MS130-48 series.

Architecture and Technical Capabilities
- Performance. The switching fabric has a capacity of 104 Gbps, and the packet forwarding rate is 77.38 Mpps, guaranteeing full-speed (non-blocking) traffic processing on all 48 ports.
- Physical interfaces. In addition to access ports and uplinks, the device has 1 dedicated RJ45 management port (Local Status Page) on the rear panel and a Reset button. The power supply is internal and fixed.
- Virtual Stacking. Unlike traditional switches that require physical stacking cables on the rear panel, the Meraki architecture allows combining up to a thousand ports into a single logical “virtual stack” through the cloud dashboard. This allows configuring ports of different physical switches simultaneously.
- Layer 2 functionality and network services. Support for 802.1Q tagging (up to 4094 VLANs), Loop-protection (STP/RSTP), DHCP relay, 8 QoS queues, and IGMP Snooping for multicast traffic optimization.
Cloud Security and Monitoring
- Access control. Integration of 802.1X authentication with RADIUS servers, MAC-based authentication, DHCP server spoofing protection (DHCP Snooping), and access control lists (IPv4/IPv6 ACL).
- Deep application analytics. The built-in traffic inspector recognizes data types at the L7 (application-layer visibility) level. The administrator sees in real time which applications (e.g., YouTube, BitTorrent, Webex) are consuming bandwidth, and can rate-limit them.
- Remote diagnostics. The dashboard allows remote Packet Capture, cable integrity testing (TDR test), and pinging devices directly from the browser. Firmware updates occur automatically within a scheduled window.
Licensing Model (Critically Important)
Meraki hardware is tightly bound to the subscription model. Without an active Enterprise License, the switch completely blocks traffic through its ports and disconnects from management. LIC-MS120-48 licenses are purchased for a fixed term (1, 3, 5, 7, or 10 years). They include cloud usage rights, regular security updates, and a Lifetime Warranty on the hardware.
