Cisco Data Center Switch 400G Core

Cisco Nexus 9300-GX2 Switch

400G Spine Switch · Ultra-Low Latency

400 Gigabit switching for the hyper-scale data center era. The Cisco Nexus 9300-GX2 Switch positions itself at the very core of your data center spine, delivering 400G QSFP-DD ports with ultra-low latency that keeps your east-west traffic flowing at wire speed. In modern spine-leaf architectures where microseconds of switching delay translate to real application performance differences, the GX2’s hardware-based cut-through switching ensures your critical workloads experience zero unnecessary latency. As data center traffic continues to grow exponentially, the GX2 is the switch that ensures your core infrastructure remains ahead of demand.

Fixed 400G Switch Line Cisco Nexus 9300-GX2 for AI Factories and Cloud Data Centers

Cisco Nexus 9300-GX2 is a line of fixed ultra-high-speed enterprise and carrier-class Cisco switches, part of the flagship Nexus 9000 family. The platform is built on the proprietary Cisco Cloud Scale ASIC architecture and optimized for building AI cluster backbones (AI/ML AI factories), IP storage fabrics, and for operation as Spine or Leaf nodes in large cloud data centers. The series’ key advantage is extreme throughput (up to 51.2 Tbps), support for 400G QSFP-DD interfaces, and built-in congestion management algorithms for lossless AI traffic.

The Nexus 9300-GX2 series targets customers building AI factories and cloud data centers: cloud service providers, large enterprises, research centers, and companies deploying GPU clusters for training and inference of large language models. The ability to operate in NX-OS mode or under Cisco ACI management allows integrating the switches both into traditional networks and software-defined topologies.

Use Cases

The Cisco Nexus 9300-GX2 is the optimal solution for organizations requiring:

  • Building AI cluster backbones (AI/ML AI factories) with lossless traffic
  • Connecting GPU servers into compute clusters with 400G interconnect
  • IP storage fabrics and NVMe over Fabrics
  • Spine or Leaf nodes in large cloud data centers
  • Deploying networks under Cisco ACI (SDN) management
  • Classic data center networks based on NX-OS with VXLAN EVPN and Segment Routing
  • Protecting interconnect with MACsec at the physical layer (L2)

Key Architectural Features

  • AI/ML workload optimization. The switches support a full suite of lossless transport technologies: hardware RoCEv2 (RDMA over Converged Ethernet), PFC priority management, explicit congestion notification (ECN), and intelligent buffering with dynamic packet congestion prevention (DPP/AFD). This is critical when combining GPU servers into AI clusters.
  • Speed flexibility and breakout cables. QSFP-DD connectors are backward compatible with previous-generation QSFP28 (100G) and QSFP+ (40G) transceivers. Using specialized breakout cables, 400G backbone ports can be configured to lower speeds: 200G, 100G, 50G, 25G, and 10G depending on endpoint server requirements.
  • Full-speed hardware encryption. All switch ports support full-speed IEEE 802.1ae MACsec encryption at the physical layer (L2). This protects Leaf-Spine interconnect and server-to-server data transfers without reducing overall throughput.
  • Deep routing tables. Depending on the series (GX2B variant with support for two ASIC slice pairs), the hardware base supports up to 2 million IPv4 LPM / host entries, up to 1 million IPv6 routes, and up to 1 million MAC addresses.
  • Two operating modes. The devices traditionally support deployment under the modular Cisco NX-OS (with VXLAN EVPN, Segment Routing, BGP support) or integration into a software-defined topology under Cisco ACI controllers.

Hardware Reliability and Infrastructure

Each device is equipped with a 6-core x86 processor and a built-in 128 GB SSD for storing memory dumps and system logs. Power and cooling redundancy is provided by fully redundant Hot-Swap power supplies (rated from 1500W to 3200W depending on model) and swappable fan modules. Both Port-side intake and Port-side exhaust airflow configurations are available.
