Dell PowerEdge R760xs Server

Cost-Optimized 2U · Intel Scalable

Dell PowerEdge R760xs Server brings the DNA of Dell’s flagship R760 to a cost-optimized platform specifically designed for organizations that demand enterprise reliability without overpaying for features they don’t need. Intel Xeon Scalable processors deliver strong VM density, while the balanced memory and storage configuration handles mixed virtualization workloads efficiently. For IT directors tasked with refreshing aging infrastructure on constrained budgets, the R760xs delivers measurably better performance-per-dollar than any competitor in its class.

Cost-Optimized 2U Server Dell PowerEdge R760xs for Cloud and Virtualization

Dell PowerEdge R760xs is a specialized 2-socket enterprise-class server in a 2U rack form factor. The “xs” index (Cost-Optimized / Scale-Optimized) indicates that the platform is designed specifically for mid-range workloads and dense cloud infrastructures where the excessive scalability of the higher-end model (R760) is not required. This makes it a balanced price-performance solution for virtualization, hosting, edge computing, object storage, and standard enterprise services (Active Directory, mail, files). The server is built on 4th and 5th Gen Intel Xeon processor architecture, DDR5 memory, and PCIe Gen 5.0 bus.

Unlike the flagship R760, the R760xs offers exactly the resource level needed for typical enterprise workloads — without paying for excess capability. This is the optimal choice for companies building scalable cloud and virtualization environments with budget control.

Use Cases

The Dell PowerEdge R760xs is the optimal solution for organizations requiring:

  • Mid-scale virtualization (VMware vSphere, Hyper-V, KVM)
  • Hosting and densely packed cloud infrastructures
  • Edge computing
  • Object storage and file services
  • Standard enterprise services (Active Directory, mail, files)
  • Web infrastructure and general-purpose applications

Compute Subsystem

The server supports one or two 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable (Sapphire Rapids) or 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable (Emerald Rapids) processors. The server is hardware-limited to CPUs with TDP up to 250 W and up to 32 cores per socket (versus 350 W and 64 cores in the classic R760). Maximum system scaling is up to 64 cores. This configuration delivers an optimal balance between performance and power consumption for typical enterprise workloads.

Memory

The server provides 16 DIMM slots (8 per socket). It supports DDR5 ECC RDIMM memory at speeds up to 4800 MT/s (4th Gen) or up to 5200 MT/s (5th Gen). Maximum memory capacity is 1 TB. Memory Mirroring and Memory Sparing modes are supported for enhanced fault tolerance.

Storage Subsystem (Hot-Swap)

Modular backplane configurations allow the server to be adapted to different storage scenarios:

  • Up to 16 × 2.5″ (SFF) SAS/SATA/NVMe SSDs
  • Up to 8 × 3.5″ (LFF) SAS/SATA HDD/SSD drives for high-capacity local storage
  • OS Boot: the server is equipped with a proprietary dedicated BOSS-N1 module on the rear panel (2 × M.2 NVMe SSDs with hardware RAID 1), preserving the main drive bays for data

Graphics Accelerators (GPU)

The design supports up to 2 compact single-wide accelerators (up to 75 W, e.g., NVIDIA L4) for entry-level AI inference or media stream acceleration. This makes the R760xs suitable for video analytics, transcoding, and inference workloads without moving to larger platforms.

Expansion Slots and Networking

The server provides up to 5 PCIe slots (including PCIe Gen5 and Gen4 lanes), plus a dedicated OCP 3.0 slot for network cards (10GbE, 25GbE) without consuming standard expansion slots. This allows simultaneous installation of GPU accelerators, RAID controllers, and high-speed network adapters.

Management, Reliability, and Cybersecurity

  • Remote Management. Monitoring, deployment, and diagnostics are handled by the embedded iDRAC9 lifecycle controller (with Express or Enterprise licenses), providing full remote access via KVM-over-IP and integration with the OpenManage ecosystem.
  • Power and Cooling. The platform is equipped with two redundant hot-swap power supplies rated at 600W, 700W, 800W, 1100W, 1400W, or 1800W with Platinum / Titanium certification. Cooling is provided by an array of hot-swappable fans.
  • Security (Cyber Resilient Architecture). The end-to-end protection suite includes a TPM 2.0 hardware crypto chip, Silicon Root of Trust secure boot technology, Firmware Verification integrity control, and System Lockdown mode to prevent unauthorized configuration changes.
