Entry-Level Block Storage Dell PowerVault ME5024 in 2U Form Factor

Dell PowerVault ME5024 is an entry-level block storage system (Entry-Level SAN/DAS) in a 2U form factor. It is purpose-built for small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) as well as branch networks. The array is optimized for storage consolidation, database support (e.g., Microsoft SQL), backup, and virtualization environments (VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V). The platform is an evolution of the popular ME4 series, delivering a twofold performance increase, support for modern host interfaces, and an all-inclusive software package.

The ME5024’s key advantage is its “all-inclusive” licensing model. All software functions (ADAPT, Thin Provisioning, Snapshots, asynchronous replication) ship with the array at no additional cost, reducing total cost of ownership and simplifying budget planning.

Use Cases

The Dell PowerVault ME5024 is the optimal solution for organizations requiring:

  • Storage consolidation in SMB and branch networks
  • Database support (Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL)
  • Backup and data recovery
  • Virtualization environments (VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V)
  • All-Flash, hybrid, or spinning pools with automatic data tiering (Auto-tiering)
  • Building SAN infrastructure with Fibre Channel, iSCSI, or Direct-Attached SAS
  • Disaster protection via asynchronous replication over LAN/WAN links

Hardware Architecture and Performance

  • Controller unit. The base chassis contains two controllers operating in Dual-Active mode. Each controller is equipped with an Intel Xeon processor and 16 GB of RAM (32 GB total per system).
  • Speed metrics. The architecture delivers throughput up to 12 GB/s read and up to 10 GB/s write. Maximum pool performance reaches 640,000 IOPS.
  • Cache protection. In the event of a power failure, cache data is automatically flushed to internal non-volatile Flash memory (backed by built-in supercapacitors).

Storage Subsystem and Scaling

The ME5024 configuration is oriented toward high-speed small form factor drives:

  • Base capacity. The front panel has 24 slots for 2.5″ SFF drives with SAS 12 Gbps interface.
  • Media types. Supports creation of all-flash, spinning (HDD 10K RPM), or hybrid pools with automatic data tiering (Auto-tiering). Available drives: SAS SSD (up to 7.68 TB RI), SAS 10K (up to 2.4 TB), and NL-SAS.
  • Expansion enclosures. Via dedicated 12Gb SAS ports on the rear panel, additional enclosures can be connected. The system scales up to 276 drives, providing maximum raw capacity up to 5.22 PB (using high-capacity 5U ME484 enclosures with 3.5″ drives).

Host Connectivity

The controller rear panel supports installation of swappable four-port interface cards (up to 8 ports per storage system), enabling flexible integration of the PowerVault ME5024 into the network fabric via the following protocols:

  • Fibre Channel (FC). High-speed ports with 32 Gbps or 16 Gbps optical support.
  • iSCSI. IP network connection via optical or copper adapters at 10 Gbps or 25 Gbps.
  • Direct-Attached SAS. Direct server connection (DAS) via 12 Gbps SAS interface.

Software Functionality and Fault Tolerance

All software licenses are supplied on an all-inclusive basis with the array:

  • ADAPT (Advanced Data Protection Technology). Proprietary distributed RAID technology. It replaces classic RAID 5/6 by distributing data and parity across the entire disk pool. This speeds up array rebuild time several times over when a drive fails and minimizes IOPS degradation. Standard RAID 1, 5, 6, 10 are also supported.
  • Thin Provisioning. Allows allocating virtual storage volume to hosts exceeding the physically available capacity at the moment, optimizing drive purchases.
  • Replication and snapshots. Built-in instant snapshot mechanisms (up to 1024 samples) and asynchronous replication over LAN/WAN links for disaster protection.
  • Integration and monitoring. The storage system is managed via the PowerVault Manager HTML5 interface. The system is fully integrated with end-to-end cloud analytics Dell CloudIQ, the OpenManage Enterprise ecosystem, and has plugins for VMware vCenter integration.
