Huawei OceanStor Pacific 9550 is a distributed, scale-out storage system of high density and large capacity, in a 5U form factor. It belongs to the specialized OceanStor Pacific family of distributed storage systems designed for working with massive volumes of unstructured data: Big Data analytics, high-performance computing (HPC), cloud Data Lake infrastructures, and long-term archival storage. The key feature of the Pacific 9550 architecture is its unique dual-node layout in a single chassis, delivering industry-record drive density (24 drives per rack unit). This reduces the physical footprint of equipment in server racks by 62.5% compared to standard universal storage servers.
The platform targets customers building scalable storage for Big Data and AI: research centers, cloud service providers, media companies, and enterprises with large archives. The scale-out architecture allows starting with a single chassis and linearly scaling capacity to hundreds of nodes without service interruption.

Hardware Architecture and Performance
- Dual-node topology. A single 5U chassis contains two independent storage compute nodes operating in parallel.
- Processor base. Each node runs on a proprietary 64-core Huawei Kunpeng 920 processor. The ARM architecture delivers high energy efficiency — average consumption is only about 20 W per hard drive.
- Memory and cache. Up to 256 GB of RAM and up to 4 specialized Half-Palm NVMe SSDs as ultra-fast metadata cache per node. For isolated OS boot, each node has 2 × 480 GB SSDs.
Storage Subsystem and Capacity
- Drive density. The chassis holds up to 120 × 3.5″ (LFF) hard drives with vertical loading and hot-swap capability (60 drives per node).
- Scalability. Base raw capacity of a single chassis ranges from 720 TB to 2400 TB depending on HDD capacity. Thanks to the distributed scale-out architecture, the system scales linearly to hundreds of nodes, uniting into a single global storage space.
- Cooling reliability. High drive density is compensated by dual-layer air channels, a counter-rotating booster fan unit, carbon fiber thermal pads, and phase-change vapor chambers, improving heat dissipation efficiency by 20%.
