Hybrid Storage Lenovo ThinkSystem DE4000H for Backup, CCTV, and Virtualization
Lenovo ThinkSystem DE4000H is an entry-level and mid-range hybrid storage system available in 2U or 4U form factors. The system runs on the specialized SANtricity operating system (developed by NetApp E-Series). It is engineered to deliver enterprise-class performance, minimal latency, and reliability for a wide range of workloads: backup and restore, data replication, video surveillance (CCTV), media streaming, as well as databases and virtualization environments in small and medium-sized businesses.
Official status. The platform has been moved to the Withdrawn Product category (discontinued from production and direct sales). Its successor is the updated generation of hybrid arrays, including the Lenovo ThinkSystem DE4200H. Support and spare parts supply for previously deployed DE4000H systems continue under Lenovo service contracts.

Base Chassis Modifications (Controller Enclosures)
The ThinkSystem DE4000H platform is available in three key chassis variants:
- DE4000H 2U24. Holds up to 24 × 2.5″ (SFF) drives. Ideal for All-Flash configurations or fast hybrid pools based on 10k RPM HDDs and SSDs.
- DE4000H 2U12. Holds up to 12 × 3.5″ (LFF) drives. Optimal for building high-capacity disk arrays based on NL-SAS drives.
- DE4000H 4U60. Ultra-dense chassis with 60 × 3.5″/2.5″ bays with vertical loading (“drawers”). Used for video surveillance and backup solutions where maximum terabytes per rack unit is critical.
Architecture, Performance, and Scaling
The storage system is built on a classic fault-tolerant design with hardware redundancy:
- Controllers. The configuration includes two controllers operating in Active-Active mode. Total system cache is up to 64 GB DRAM (32 GB per controller). The cache is protected by battery-backed modules with supercapacitors to prevent data loss during power failure.
- Performance. The platform delivers up to 300,000 read IOPS with All-Flash pools and provides throughput of up to 9.2 GB/s read and up to 5.4 GB/s write.
- Scalability. Additional expansion drive shelves (series Lenovo DE120S, DE240S, or DE600S) can be connected to the base HA pair via 12Gb SAS. The system supports up to 192 drives, scaling raw capacity up to 3.375 PB.

Each controller has built-in ports and supports installation of one Host Interface Card (HIC). This allows flexible combination of server connection protocols:

Software Functionality and Pool Optimization
The ThinkSystem DE4000H ships with an extended data management software package:
- Dynamic Disk Pools (DDP). Proprietary technology that distributes data blocks, spare space, and parity information across the entire disk pool. Unlike traditional RAID (5/6), DDP dramatically accelerates rebuild and recovery time when a drive fails, minimizing performance degradation.
- Traditional RAID. Support for classic hardware RAID levels 0, 1, 3, 5, 6, and 10.
- Data Protection Tools. Local and remote mirroring (Synchronous / Asynchronous Mirroring), instant Snapshots, and full Volume Copy.
- SSD Read Cache. Ability to use SSDs as read cache extension to accelerate hybrid arrays built on slower spinning HDDs.
